Well, Germany was a pioneer (in the early 20th century!) in transgender-identity tolerance if not acceptance, and Berlin is … a lovely place to live for anyone, but certainly for trans people. I think you’re right about history. In my experience, most Germans are quite aware of what the Nazis did to LGBTQ people, and they are careful not to even creep in the direction of intolerance. Some of the ways Catholic priests and bishops in the U.S. talk about queer people would be utterly unacceptable in Germany, for the reasons above. So, perhaps that helps a healthier dialogue take place.
