Well, before I read the article, I made a bet to myself that it was Joan of Arc. But Francis is a great choice too!
He was a revolutionary reforming figure in Church history, popular with the masses and preaching a gospel of love altogether at odds with what the official Church preached. It’s a shame how the powerful hierarchy eventually subverted and subsumed his message.
But it’s cool to see how centuries later Caravaggio recognized him and celebrated him. Queer eye for the queer guy or something like that? ;-)
