Well, as a former Hamtramck business owner, let me tell you that those city leaders blatantly betrayed queer people, after we fiercely supported them on so many issues.

I personally sat in on meetings and had private conversations with Muslim city leaders about how to increase tolerance and acceptance. I wrote letters to the editor urging tolerance of the loud, amplified Muslim calls for prayer than many non-Muslim residents were angry about.

Those leaders asaured everyone they were all for tolerance and acceptance of marginalized people.

Within a few short years, they had all turned into snarling homophobes and transphobes.

They turned on us viciously.

So I condemn them without reservation. They are foul, horrible people ... because they are homophobes and transphobes. They would be just as foul and terrible if they were Christians or if they were atheists.

Their ethnicity and their religion have nothing to do with the fact that they are liars who betrayed their allies.
