We moved to Gadsden AL from Ohio when I was about 11. I was fairly well startled by the overt racism I encountered, by the casual use of the N word. I don't think actual racism was more pronounced in Alabama, but overt, spoken racism seemed to be.

If you're interested, here's a very short story about about one of my first encounters with Alabama racism. The incident was very formative for me.
