While I am super opposed to JK Rowling’s anti-trans comments, I am not at all opposed to the Harry Potter phenomenon.

I’m a gay dad who raised a teenage boy. Growing up, he was not a reader. Nor was he, frankly, much of a deep thinker. He was kind and empathetic, but he knew very little about social issues and didn’t seem very interested.

Then we started reading Harry Potter together. He devoured the books, much to my astonishment. (He REALLY wasn’t a reader. lol)

And then we had many many many conversations about social justice, not that I called it that to him.

He would point out the injustices that he experienced in the books, and then we’d talk about the parallels in real life.

That really aroused his passions. I loved sharing the books with him, and I love how he developed a deeper sense of justice because of reading them.

So yes, I am deeply disappointed with the author, but my disappointment can’t take away from the value my son and I discovered in the books.
