Ugh. I can relate so well. Being called egotistical because you care enough to dig into issues and write about them is so frustrating and distressing.

I found myself frustrated and distressed a couple of weeks ago after writing an article I cared very deeply about, a matter having to do with LGBTQ equality.

I have literally years of concentrated expertise in studying the issue I wrote about. I sourced and cited my article thoroughly, linking to academic and cultural experts.

But as usual when writing about controversial issues, I got shouted down and hated on by people on several sides. I didn’t hate that they disagreed with me so much as I hated that so many of them called me either egotistical, attention seeking, or something otherwise similar.

But you know what? None of those people could even express their ideas coherently. Most of them had no idea what they were talking about, and it showed.

So I’ll content myself with doing the work, thinking and researching and writing as well as I know how to do.

And if people want to think that’s an ego problem on my part (or on yours) then they’ll just have to think what they think. They’re not doing the work, after all. They’re just throwing stones at the people who are.
