Two things strike me about Coles' position.

The first thing is his snide implication that only people who agree with his definition of marriage count as "disciples of Christ." He's quite clearly part of that camp that has drawn a line in the sand over LGBTQ matters. Their definition of Christianity centers (bizarrely) around sexuality instead of around the teachings of Jesus. How pernicious, then, that Cole would invoke Christ and discipleship in his argument.

Second, Cole is clearly raising the specter of people like him leaving the Baptist Union. That's what he means when he speaks of dissolution. He's implying that he and others like him will leave because sexual matters are so central to their idea of what it means to be a Christian that they cannot tolerate associating with people who believe differently.

That brings us right back to my first point, I guess. Who's really being a disciple of Christ here? Clearly, not Coles.
