As the Trump administration enriches billionaires at the expense of working people, it deliberately distracts Americans by waging war on queer people and other people on the margins. Many Americans embrace the distraction because they fervently oppose LGBTQ rights and visibility anyway. Queer people just about anywhere in the nation could tell you this.

How bad are things getting?

Among countless dystopian headlines, I just read a story I would never have thought of including in one of my novels, because it sounds utterly unbelievable.

Imagine you’re a young Black woman of 19 out for a day of fun with your ex-girlfriend who is still your good friend. Imagine the two of you are shopping at Walmart. Imagine several workers are giving you the side eye and even following you around — you suppose because of your tattoos or maybe your hoodie, which is a safe fashion choice for White men, but not so safe…
