Too many white Americans are committed to the idea that structural change is not necessary, to believing that things are not great now but are getting better slowly and steadily.

They're okay with a gradual approach and with trusting that things will actually get better, something that does not seem inevitable to me.

Taking that gradualist position lets them off the hook to their own consciences.
