To my knowledge, insulin is not something one can make at home. Pharmaceutical facilities and expertise are required. This is one of the reasons why drug companies can get away with shocking levels of profiteering. Note, however, that in almost all industrialized nations other than the U.S., insulin is NOT ruinously expensive. Government regulation prevents profiteering and protects consumers.
