Timely article. The city of Tampa in Florida just canceled a major Pride event for this upcoming summer, citing the state's newly signed anti-drag law.
I think Tampa Pride has got it wrong. Now is not the time to capitulate. Now is the time to be more assertive and more proud than ever.
As one gay man said to me on Twitter this morning, our response should be to ALL show up in drag. Let the cops in Florida try to arrest tens or hundreds of thousands of drag queens at the same time.
Pride parades are protests. Obviously, it's time to get back to that protest mode, and to be as in your face as possible.
I very much doubt that most people agree with new waves of oppression Republicans are ushering in.
We need to be in the streets in force this summer, defying the powers that be, daring them to arrest us. Just like we were when Pride was born.
