Those were the days! That film was a mainstream Hollywood hit that played in just about every suburban cineplex. It was was delightful in its gentle message of love and tolerance. Watching it in public with my boyfriend filled both of us with with a sense of inclusion and optimism, especially given the film's cheerful reception by the cis/straight audience surrounding us.
I think back to that experience and I realize that the film would be intensely controversial today, probably even inspiring protests in certain circles.
I guess that's part of our queer history too! The ups and downs! The advances and then the pushbacks.
We're in an period of intense pushback right now, although I have great hope that another wave of acceptance is about to roll in.
Your brother-in-law is lucky to have you to help provide history, perspective, and guidance.
Good for you, and thanks so much for sharing it with the rest of us!
