This whole situation is just so insidious. In my opinion, there's not a chance in hell that the DeSantis presidential campaign is going to get off the ground. He is polling abysmally nationwide, and hardcore Trump supporters are never going to go with anybody but Trump anyway. By directly fighting with Trump, DeSantis has ensured that Trump supporters will dislike him even if Trump has to drop out of the race due to criminal justice problems.

Nonetheless, look what DeSantis has done. He's lowered the homophobia bar. Again. He makes Trump look less homophobic by comparison. He's normalized the shocking attitudes that Trump unleashed.

What people are debating today, including these ridiculous gay conservatives you're writing about, isn't whether homophobia should be socially acceptable, but how much of it should be.

A few signs point to the nation pushing back against this. But it's happening anyway.
