This was the danger that so many of us in the late nineties saw as same-sex marriage came into focus in activism, pushed up from the grassroots.

However you want to talk about it, using words like respectability politics or assimilationism, our communities have always existed in tense balance between radical liberation and mainstream respectability.

For quite a long time it seemed as if the pendulum has swung forcibly in the direction of assimilation. I see it swinging back now though, I think.
