This was a tough read for me! My family and I went through a similar experience in 2020 with my dad, who died at home in hospice care.

The bathroom scene was tough for me, because something almost the same happened while I was the only caregiver at home. Family were here, but they were sleeping at Dad's brother's house a few miles away.

Dad fell pretty hard, hit his head, and I wasn't strong enough to lift him and get him back into bed. I called hospice and family, and we soon had things sorted, but my powerlessness during that moment is something I'll never forget.

I'm glad you're including all this in your memoir, and not just because hospice and end-of-life care are important topics to think about.

I think this chapter is important to the narrative arc of your story, highlighting growth and healing.

I mean, the John who dealt with Richard's meth-induced paranoia is a very different John from the person who "raced" his dad to buckle up before driving him to hospice.

I really like this chapter, as painful as it felt to read.
