This reminds me of my favorite private detective series, set in Chicago, written by Sarah Peretsky. Her private dick (jane?) V.I. Warshawski, is a fascinating character, and Chicago's Southside is almost as much a character as she is.
I haven't read one of the novels in well over a decade, and I don't remember any of the particulars about crimes and how she solved them. But I'll never forget her rich portrayals of Chicago and the people who live there.
I've run into Hansen's detective series before, and I might have even read one, though if I did it was so long ago I don't remember details.
But it sure sounds like this would be right up my alley! A plunge into period Los Angeles could be fascinating, especially with a gay detective to act as tour guide.
Thanks for introducing this author and his character to all of us!
