This reminds me of a study I read a few years ago that demonstrated a great disparity in how people respond to regular church attendance. For most people, frequent church attendance correlates to better mental health and better reported happiness and satisfaction with life.

But for LGBTQ people, more church attendance correlates to more reported depression and other mental-health struggles.

The study did not account for fully affirming churches that don't teach that queer people are sinful for acting on queer sexual orientation or gender identity. Those churches exist, but in small numbers that are drowned out by the more general situation.
