This photo of the three women on the bench is so striking. The woman on the right looks so clearly in love and not shy about expressing physical tenderness as a manifestation. But am I really seeing what I think I'm seeing? This is the trouble with cultural changes, I suppose. How do we judge body language when the 1930s dialect differed from today's? I'd never heard of a Boston marriage before reading your piece, but it's quite the interesting concept and an example of how spoken written language also often contains connotations we aren't aware of. I hope you write more on that subject!
