This is the cruel reality of the way our political system has been structured for a long time, and even more so since the Supreme Court ruled that corporations have the same free speech-rights as individual people when it comes to political contributions.

It takes many millions of dollars to win even a low-profile seat as a representative in the US Congress. It takes that much money because there's so much of it available, and a huge percentage of it comes from corporations and other big donors line up to dole it out.

You don't get much more anti-democratic than that. Our representatives don't really care what ordinary people think, and in a certain sense, they can't afford to care.

Thanks to our Supreme Court.
