This is such a big deal! Many Americans may not quite understand the significance, because for us, soccer is seen as less masculine than American football. Soccer players in school can be dissed as "gay" just because they choose the sport. And we don't have direct experience with British/European football fan culture. Soccer fans here are genteel by comparison, usually middle to upper middle class and more educated than the general public.

But even so, we don't have any out gay men players. Our women players are a bit more outspoken! I haven't read the article yet, but I just received a notification that they finished negotiating pay equity for women in US Soccer.
