This is probably a very good time to point out that the nation of Canada is only beginning to come to grips with the fact that various Christian churches collaborated with the Canadian government until recently to stomp out indigenous culture and force conversion to Christianity by making children attend residential schools where they were savagely mistreated. Indigenous nations are just beginning to dig up all the corpses from unmarked graves now. It’s a horror show.
While the Catholic Church is mostly to blame, other Christian churches also participated in the brutality. This is not ancient history; the practices only stopped short decades ago. Billions of people alive today had already been born while those practices were going on.
The Catholic Church refuses to share responsibility, right up until this minute. The prime minister of Canada has several times asked Pope Francis to apologize. He has refused for years.
This is just one example of how vicious institutional Christianity is. Unrepentantly vicious.
Lest than anyone think this is strictly a Canadian problem, the United States has its own residential school nightmare on its hands. Canada has at least begun to grapple with the problem. We in the United States have not even started to confront our Christian churches' brutal racism against indigenous people.
