This is an excellent illustration of the difficulties that come up when we insist on using antique language in biblical translations. At one time in English, ‘scripture” simply meant writing. When the King James Bible was written, scripture had come into the English language from French. It’s still used in modern French as an everyday word to mean writing, with no religious context.

When we capitalize the word and use it to mean canonical text, we are assigning a different meaning than what the original author intended to convey.
