This is a critical point that should not be overlooked. Nuns and priests are actually intensely conservative compared to the average lay Catholic. You can't become a nun or a priest without affirming that gay people are depraved and disordered. You can't become a non or a priest without buying in to sexist values. Because to become a nun or a priest, you must affirm all doctrines and of the Church. As a lay person, you don't have to do that.

So in the 21st century, how do you become a nun or a priest and affirm really disgusting hate speech?

Well, you can't if you're a decent person.

Which is why the Church hierarchy is increasingly filling up with reactionary monsters.

Look, Pope Francis is mildly, maybe progressive. But he still affirms disgusting Church language about queer people. And he's regarded as a force for moderation!

A force for moderation in a church that teaches (with his approval) that I commit "acts of grave depravity" because I'm gay.

That's moderate? As far as I'm concerned, the Pope can fuck himself.

But there we have it. Church leaders can either be disgusting like Pope Francis, or they can be even more disgusting.

But nuns and priests cannot be truly good, decent people as long as they affirm the doctrines of the Church.

So we're left with a nucleus of truly disgusting nuns and priests.

And the Church is therefore destined, in my opinion, to become gradually, but not too gradually, more evil, more twisted, and more disgusting.
