This is a challenging piece, Kaylin. I often find myself dueling internally over my opposition to harsh carceral justice in general (particularly in the United States) contrasted with my desire for justice often denied to marginalized victims.
I tell myself often that criminal penalties in our justice system are too harsh, too broadly applied, and not conducive to positive change. But I often find myself angry, at the same time, when perpetrators of racist violence, abusers of women, gay bashers, trans bashers, etc "get off lightly."
I have long recognized this difficult-to-reconcile tension in my thinking, but I haven't found many ways to reframe or re-philosophize. I've just lived with the dissonance, albeit uncomfortably.
You've just provided a really interesting if challenging road map to rethinking
Thanks!
