This!

In order to accept trans people, we must believe what they tell us about their inner lives and experiences. This should not be difficult, but as Tucker Lieberman writes in Prism & Pen this morning in an article about a response to the Cass Review, too many people are unwilling to do that. Too many are further unwilling to concede that the question even matters.

As a cisgender gay man, I was once accustomed to people not believing that the loving feelings I experience toward other men are real or important. I was also accustomed to people not thinking the question mattered even if they did believe me. Thankfully, many (but certainly not all) elements of society have begun to respect the autonomy and inherent human value of gay people.

We're struggling as a society to get to a point where trans people are presumed to have the same dignity, worth, and autonomy as anyone else.

Your personal experiences really drive home why that struggle is so important. Your child deserves to be as valued and cherished as any child.

Thank you for having the strength and courage to be their champion in such a public way!
