This chapter reminds me of tales I’ve read about Civil War drummer boys, many of them as young as your tiny telegraph boy here. Much like radio operators today, drummers used to be were for communication during the heat of battle. They were often targeted especially for that. Yet by the mores of the time, sending boys into battle was not considered odd or inhumane.
