This all sounds really stressful and manipulative to me, like an intentional gaming of interpersonal relationships, like boiling down complex human emotions and experiences into broadly predictable transactions. All I can to that is "yuck."

I don't necessarily mean that speed dating itself must be "yuck." I just mean we human beings are too complex to describe in simplistic ways, and that we should be open to people more broadly than your professor suggested.
