They still do, actually. The Roman Catholic Church makes a big deal of insisting that straight and heterosexual are meaningless terms. Of course, the Roman Catholic Church also teaches hundreds of millions of school children every school year that gay people are depraved and disordered.
You just don't get more viciously homophobic than Catholic theology. So, it's quite instructive that Catholic leaders insist that "straight" and "heterosexual" are meaningless or even offensive terms.
What they're really saying is that gay and LGBT are meaningless terms, that queer people simply make evil moral choices.
So they try to suppress the terms, which only makes discussion more difficult. But that's what judgmental bigots do, as a rule.
