There is no such institution as “today’s Christian Church.” Christianity is not a monolith, as thousands of out and partnered transgender and gay ministers, priests, deacons, and bishops in dozens of Christian churches and denominations can testify. Christianity is not any more fundamentally incompatible with LGBTQ equality that it is with racial equality — even though Christian churches propped up slavery and segregation for a long time.
Anti-LGBTQ bigots choose to make Christianity incompatible with decency, but they don’t have to. They could choose the theologies of churches that fight for social justice instead.
