Then there's the old "don't split infinitives" chestnut, another prescriptivist favorite that tries to impose unnatural usage on English. Lots of English teachers pounded that into kids' heads too, but writers have been cheerfully splitting infinitives since English was born and never stopped. In the spoken language, to casually split an infinitive is so ordinary that nobody notices.

As in the sentence above. lol
