The student journalists who did most of the reporting on the story didn't mention panic buttons, but they have complained that the university hasn't yet installed locks on the third-floor private study rooms. If the couple had been able to lock the door, the high school students wouldn't have been able to get in. Students have been asking for locks for some time given the general public has pretty much unrestricted access to the building during office hours. (As a matter of state law.) Apparently, the university has installed locks on rooms on the first and second floor, but they have not yet got to the third floor. I don't know if they plan to or what's up with that.
