The fact that Pope Francis will not discipline homophobic bishops is not lost on us queer people. Francis removed a Puerto Rican bishop from office last month over the bishop’s anti-mask, anti-vax views, but Francis does nothing to protect queer Catholics except utter the occasional platitude.

When the Bishop of Marquette effectively kicked all queer Catholics in his diocese out of the Church earlier this year, a few Catholics called on Francis to remove him from office, but he didn’t, and nobody thinks he will.

He’ll take to action against this bishop either. Because queer Catholics are legitimate targets for persecution and oppression in the Church Francis runs, despite Vatican propaganda to the contrary.
