The conservative war on women's autonomy and humanity is sickening to watch. Facebook's cooperation is sickening to watch.
We queer people are also relentlessly aware the evil rotting at the core of Facebook. When Zuck and his evil minions announced that henceforth Facebook users would be free to call us mentally ill and otherwise insult us, we sucked in our breath in pain and fear, even though none of this is really new. It's just overt now.
Personally helped lead a campaign some years ago when Facebook allowed thousands of comments to remain standing urging us to kill ourselves and telling us that God wanted us dead.
These comments came in response to many memorials that went up around Facebook after the death of a Lebanese pop star who happened to be a lesbian.
Those of us involved in the campaign to report all the comments received thousands of responses from Facebook that those comments (which literally urged us to kill ourselves and wished us dead) did not violate Facebook's community standards.
We knew then that Facebook's pledge to stand up for marginalized minorities was gone, was dead, did not mean anything.
Now, Facebook's hateful, on-the-ground reality is official policy.
And yet, I help administer private queer Facebook groups consisting of over 100,000 people who use the platform to connect with one another.
What else is there to do when the powerful make clear they despise you, or at least don't want to give up profits from others who despise us?
I don't know. I'm at a loss.
