That song meant a hell of a lot to me when it came out, even though I’m an American. I’ll never forget a friend playing the record for me in his parent’s basement, eying me in all his teenage-straight-boy seriousness, wanting to see the reaction to the gift he was giving me.

No, there was nothing camp about it. It was a radical cry of outrage, and a demand for public discussion.

More than a decade later as I marched in the streets with Act Up and Queer Nation in New York City, I would sometimes hum the tune.

I don’t know where I stand on the side of debate or don’t debate, especially regarding legislation in another country.

I do know that I stand for public information, discussion, education.

And even marching in the streets when it’s necessary to do that to draw attention.

Forgive me for rambling, but seeing the lyrics and hearing that tune again got me riled up. ;-)
