Thanks for your solidarity! Yes, Tyler’s story has a very familiar “feel” compared to other stories about marginalized people seeking justice — or just seeking support.
You know, I’ve talked to few people who think this story is over the top, that Tyler should work within the system, be patient, or accept that life “is what is.”
But he should not have to walk around campus knowing people are threatening him with violence. Nobody should. He SHOULD expect that university officials would would come down like a hammer against violent homophobia and speak up with full-throated support of LGBTQ students.
Well, the phone meeting he had with Kerr just as I was publishing this story showed him that SUNY Oswego, at least for the moment, has no plans to anything remotely resembling either condemnation of homophobes or full-throated support of queer people.
So Tyler is seizing the day. Thanks for encouraging him!
