Thank you so very much for honoring Nex and bringing up these critical issues.
Since I wrote the article, the medical examiner has ruled that Nex's cause of death was a combination of drugs he took — Prozac and Benadryl —making suicide seem like a probability. Other medical experts, however, in interviews with The Advocate, point out that such a combination only leads to death in extraordinarily rare circumstances. So, we don't know.
We do know that the medical examiner's report detailed very serious injuries that while perhaps not fatal, were certainly severe and criminal.
This past Monday, many members of the local community showed up at a school board meeting and called district officials to task for their lack of response to pervasive culture of anti-LGBTQ bullying at Nex's school.
The district superintendent denied the charges, claiming that bullying is not a serious problem in the district.
Student after student stood up to tell her she's wrong. So did many parents.
Sadly, she did not seem to be hearing them.
