As a writer with over a million views per month on Quora.com, I recently had my account banned because of my clear, non-compromising stance in opposition to homophobia.
While the staff at Quora tolerate blatant levels of outrageous homophobia on the site, they expect us LGBTQ people to be silent about it.
They frame my ban in terms of their “Be Nice, Be Respectful” policy.
Religious people on Quora preach almost daily, however, quoting religious texts branding LGBTQ people as “abominations” or posting insulting imagery.
That’s tolerated. That’s OK on Quora.
Let one of us call homophobic bigotry what it is -bigotry- and we’re out.
It’s a shameless double standard.
Not something you’d expect from the supposedly progressive world of the Silicon Valley.
My experience becoming a popular writer on Quora, and then being banned for my views, has taught me a lot about the prevalence of homophobia in our society.
Thanks for the article!
