I think most of us understand that many things that are legal are wrong. But for some reason, a lot of progressive people get hung up on arguing about how anti-LGBTQ bigotry on the part of religious institutions is legal. Or should be legal in certain circumstances on Constitutional grounds.

As if anybody really cared about what is or should be legal in terms of hurting people for who they are innately.

The greater problem as you point out is the societal tolerance of religious homophobia and transphobia. “Shrug, well, that’s their belief.”

Beliefs are not neutral. We should not respect ideas just because people hold them. It’s pretty frustrating to see that many people in society have no problem judging some ideas as wrong or bad or harmful, but stop short of doing that with anti-LGBTQ ideas as long as they’re based on religion.
