Such a beautiful story, thanks! Maybe I'll think about it the next time I make pancakes. I add cornmeal sometimes, but only occasionally when I'm in just the right mood.
Oddly, there's a gay connection to my pancake preference, and it comes from The Sopranos! A closeted gay mobster in Tony's crew runs away to New England after getting outed, realistically afraid for his life.
He lands in New England and meets a gay man who's a cook at a diner renowned for jonny cakes, pancakes with cornmeal.
The cook is a lovely man, happy with his life and potentially ready to fall in love with the disgraced gay mobster, who seems to possibly be on a path toward redemption.
Of course, being The Sopranos, redemption is not what happens. The gay cook suffers for having met the gay mobster, just like most tertiary characters in The Sopranos suffer for having been close to members of Tony's crew.
Nevertheless, ever since, I sometimes add cornmeal to my pancake recipe and think about the kind, happy Jonnycakes character who the show runners depicted so positively.
Jonny cakes are now, to me, forever gay!
Isn't that funny? ;-)
