Sound much like French, then. "Jean est homosexuel" doesn't have the sting it has in English, and "Jean est gay" doesn't mean exactly what it would mean in English.

One of my favorite French-language pop singers (the Belgian/Rwandan phenom Stromae) even has a line in which he sings, "J'suis homo," which would be really insulting in English, but he does so in a positive way.

(Stromae isn't gay; he's singing that as part a list of other minority groups he feels solidarity with.)

I'm constantly fascinated by how languages evolve and how words that started out with similar (or even exactly the same) meanings in some languages end up meaning something pretty different in other languages — even in very closely related languages.
