Something that especially disturbs me about this case is that the judge did a substantial "downward departure" from sentencing guidelines. By all legal standards, this cop should have been sentenced to far longer in prison than she was.

The judge justified the downward departures specifically BECAUSE she was a police officer. He said so, point blank.

I wish more people would be screaming bloody murder about this. Police officers should be held to higher standards not lower ones. They have the power of life and death, and as we all know they are killing black Americans at horrifying rates.

The only thing that’s going to stop them is the fear of the harsh hammer of the law. The only thing that’s going to stop them is if they know that a "mistake" that leads to death will mean they’re going to prison for a very very long time.

If that starts to happen, watch them change their behavior. Watch them start being less bullying, less murderous, and less evil.

If it doesn’t start to happen, they’re just going to continue killing.
