Somebody hasn't been paying attention. In fact, transgender people, who have existed in various cultures around the globe since before the dawn of human history, are often not free to live openly. In the United States, changing sex on official documents is fairly hit or miss and is not possible in much of the nation. Nor is using a public restroom to relieve oneself possible without fear of assault and harassment, fears that are ramping up as confrontation and even violence increases.
