So these were African fire ants, and they were supposed to add both crunch and a bit of stinging heat to the dish. To be honest, we were both underwhelmed. The lighting in the dining room was intentionally very low, and we had to turn on our phone flashlights to even determine that there were actually ants in the salad. We both admitted later that we could neither taste them nor feel their texture against all the other crunchy textures in the salad.

This was a really good restaurant, but that salad was not one of their finest inspirations, if only because a $15 surcharge for ants was a bit much when we wouldn't have noticed if we hadn't known. 🤣
