So I wrote this little article about how Procter & Gamble removed the feminine Venus symbol from packages of sanitary pads. Some transgender guys and non-binary people had written to them and asked nicely, saying they menstruated too and wanted to know if packaging could be just a little less totally binary.

The Procter & Gamble people (who I interviewed) were like, “Oh yeah, we never thought that. OK.”

So they did a tiny package redesign, not changing anything except removing that little symbol pretty much nobody had ever noticed anyway.

But oh my god, how all the usual suspects of transphobes noticed! They screamed and shouted about how Procter and Gamble was erasing women. To this day, my article, which is now well over a year old, continues to attract hate-filled comments from women screaming about how those awful trans people are destroying them.

It’s so absurd. All Procter & Gamble did was respond with thoughtful kindness to some trans people who asked them very nicely for a packaging redesign no one in a million years would ever have noticed if they had simply seen it on a store shelf.

The enraged reaction to that tiny redesign is transphobia. That’s what it’s all about. It’s a perfect example of how these transphobic people think. They’re just filled with hate and vitriol. They are awful people who don’t want even the smallest accommodation (that doesn’t affect them in the least) offered to transgender people.
