Should be noted that Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay accomplished this 3 years BEFORE the United States, where same-sex marriage didn't become recognized as a right until 2016 via the Supreme Court decision Obergefell v Hodges.
Also worth noting is that Mexico seems to be on a continual forward or progressive arc right now with respect to LGBTQ equality, while the U.S. (or at least many parts of it) is experiencing a pretty strong backlash.
