She was absolutely adored by the French people and is remembered to this day as a performance artist, a resistance fighter, and an advocate for children.

The French take a certain amount of (justified) pride in having embraced her after she left the United States because of racism.

Some people say that lets French people excuse racism in France, which has always been different from in the U.S. That may be true, but credit where credit is due. Josephine Baker was far from the only Black American to find a welcome in France they could not find at home.
