Selling rainbow merchandise is very profitable. Which is why corporations do it. So, let’s not kid ourselves.
On the other hand, it’s true that corporate America often leads the way in LGBTQ rights. Fortune 500 corporate HR policies are often more progressive than the law demands. Major corporations often apply economic power to pressure states that enact anti-LGBTQ legislation.
Why they do that is complex. It probably starts with the fact that corporations tend to be led by people educated at left leaning universities and inculcated with progressive values.
But the profit motive is undeniable. Pride is profitable.
So I have a lot of mixed feelings. Corporate sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup in Russia last year was shameful.
We have a lot of work to do.
