Sadly, I don’t think you can stop people from being wrong all the time, and I think the problem is getting worse, as verifiable facts and data become less important to people on different sides of issues.
I don’t write for any major publications, but I write a lot about LGBTQ equality, and I get a lot of responses sometimes.
I get enough responses to see a trend in which people routinely deny facts that interfere with their opinions or advance false information that supports them.
As far as I can see, people like this, some of whom are highly educated and otherwise reasonable, are growing more and more comfortable waving away reality than dealing with it.
I’m not sure, but I think this might have something to do with the prevalence of false news and data on social media. It seems the more fungible truth becomes, the more likely people are dismiss it or subvert it.
