Sadly, here in the United States we have similar problems. The state of our laws are such that we don’t need any new legislation to allow private schools to fire teachers for being transgender or gay. That’s the status quo, and it is entirely ordinary, sadly. Some of the best prep schools in the United States are Catholic high schools, and you can barely pick up a newspaper without reading about a gay teacher being “found out" and sacked for it. The same goes for a plethora of private Evangelical-run schools in the US, though they don’t usually have the prestige of elite Catholic prep schools.

Public schools are better, but in conservative parts of the country school boards are often besieged by vocal minorities outraged about teachers mentioning LGBTQ issues, or being supportive of LGBTQ students. Transgender and gay teachers working in that kind of environment tell me they feel like they’re going to war every day when they go to their jobs.

Homophobia in education is still a very real problem in the United States and as you say it is very toxic. LGBTQ and straight kids are internalizing the toxins.
