Right up through 1990, Jeffry, I had to worry about losing my security clearance because I was gay.

I left the Air Force in 1990 because with the imminent collapse of the Iron Curtain and the predictable fall of the Soviet Union, my career prospects as a Russian language, Soviet specialist didn’t look very bright.

In the back of my mind, though, I always worried that a stray rumor might cause my clearance to be pulled at any moment.

I’d seen it happen!
